St. Patrick's Church Food Pantry
Background:
We are and "emergency" food pantry offering a 3-day supply of food for each family. These families are referred to us by the church office, by St. Vincent de Paul, by Northern Churches Care, by Care and Share, by Mount St. Francis, by United Way, and by word of mouth. Normally, we limit out assistance to once a month. Under special circumstances, i.e. requests from St. Vincent de Paul sudden serious illness, or requests from the church office, we allow weekly visits when needed. We are open each Friday from 4 - 5 p.m. (these are our posted hours - volunteers often start early or stay late to accommodate our families when possible)
Mission:
Our mission is to carry out the teachings of Christ to feed the hungry is posted on our bulletin board outside the pantry door. We don't just feed our families, though. The compassionate faith filled atmosphere that our volunteers display as they give assistance demonstrates Christ's love. The many children that donate food items each Sunday are learning to be good stewards. Our ministry encompasses a huge number of parishioners to include not only the over 50 volunteers, but also the many children, youth, and adults who regularly donate items. Reaching outside themselves to help other impacts these people. Our teenagers often earn needed volunteer hours working in the pantry, while learning how to share with others.
Outreach:
We have tried in the past year to help our families help themselves by providing information concerning Share Colorado, WIC, Food Stamps, nutritional pamphlets from local universities and many other community resources. We have also added a volunteer translator each week, since the number of Spanish speaking families has increased dramatically. St. Patrick's Sunday bulletins are now available to our families along with Spanish newspapers, Senior Resource Centers, United Way 211 and Colorado Springs Helping Hands information sheets. Our Volunteers have at times referred clients to St. Vincent de Paul, out Stephens Ministry and community organizations for assistance. Filled bags of groceries are left in the Church office for St. Vincent de Paul or the Church staff to distribute when needed.
